As a therapy practitioner since 2011, I have been trained in and use a variety of therapeutic techniques, incorporating tools that allow the client to address both internal and external challenges. In Scottish lore, the Cait Sidhe is believed to be a cat spirit from the realm of the fae that usually appears in the form of a black cat with a white spot on its chest. It is considered a bad spirit and may be the source of fears about black cats in general. Although, in some stories, the Cait Sidhe would show up on your doorstep and grant your home prosperity. Black cats, while no worse than other cats, are often adopted at a lower rate than cats other colorings.
As a therapist and an owner of many black cats over the years, I believe in undoing some of the beliefs we have that lead to harm to us and other living beings. I believe in making our own luck and realizing that a lot of what we consider “luck”- bad or good- is related to systemic, sociocultural factors that interact with our individual existence. Black cats are the underdogs (undercats?) of the feline world and do not deserve the bad reputation that they have held for so many years. They deserve as much love, care, and appreciation as other kitties.
Maybe you feel a bit like you don’t fit in or that the challenges of your mental health make it hard to navigate the world around you. It’s important to feel seen for all that you are- the good, the bad, and the neutral- by someone in your life. It’s always my goals as a therapist to teach a client to advocate for their needs to be met, rather than change just for the sake of making others more comfortable; to self-identify areas that need work, rather than be told what they need to change about themselves; and to encourage people to be their most authentic selves, rather than wear a mask to fit in. It’s a dance between learning to grow healthy tools within the self, learning ways to reduce internally distressing experiences, learning to communicate and work with other people in your life, learning to identify external factors that are blocking you from living your best and most fulfilling life, and learning to encourage the world around you to adapt to your needs and understand you better.
Cats are playful, resourceful, and flexible. They can be stubborn and insistent about things that matter to them. In a tough situation, they land on their feet. They balance work and play. Although they are known for being independent, they rely on others and can be very lovingly bonded to others. They are curious about the world around them. And… they are unapologetically their own selves.
